History of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure

The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure of Bayelsa State is a statutory governmental entity responsible for the planning, construction, and maintenance of engineering works and infrastructure within the state. Established in 1996, coinciding with the creation of Bayelsa State from the old Rivers State, the ministry has evolved through various organizational transformations. Initially known as the Ministry of Works and Transportation, it adopted its current nomenclature Ministry of Works and Infrastructure in 2012, while consistently adhering to its core mandates and responsibilities.

Where we started

This was our humble beginnings at the boatyard in downtown Yenagoa in 1996, now home to the Ministry of Transportation. Despite the harsh conditions, our dedicated team, inherited from the old Rivers State, delivered on our mission to spearhead the massive infrastructure development of the newly established Bayelsa State.

Old secretariat complex bayelsa state

In 1997, recognizing the urgent need for a central secretariat to house all government ministries and agencies, we embarked on a pivotal project. By 2002, we proudly completed the one-story secretariat at Ovom-Yenagoa, nestled around the government house neighborhood. This edifice stands as one of our legacy projects in Bayelsa State. The Ministry of Works, along with other ministries and agencies, relocated to this new complex, enabling them to operate with greater comfort and efficiency.
