Legal Unit Mandate
The Legal Unit provides comprehensive legal support to the Ministry by offering expert legal advice, representation, and services in policy drafting, contracts, and agreements. The Unit plays a pivotal role in defending the interests of the State Government through the Ministry, ensuring all legal matters are handled effectively and in compliance with the law.
Key Responsibilities
- Legal Representation & Defense
Representing and defending the Ministry in all legal matters, including suits, disputes, and other legal proceedings where the Ministry is a party. - Legal Advice & Opinions
Providing timely and accurate legal advice and opinions on issues affecting, involving, or concerning the Ministry, ensuring sound decision-making and legal compliance. - Drafting of Legal Documents
Drafting and reviewing contracts, Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), agreements, and policies on behalf of the Ministry, ensuring all documents are legally sound and in the Ministry’s best interests. - Dispute Resolution
Managing and resolving disputes—both internal and external—arising from the Ministry’s operations or engagements. This includes mediation and negotiation to reach amicable solutions. - Litigation Management
Promptly responding to litigations against the Ministry, including filing briefs, handling court proceedings, and protecting the Ministry’s legal interests in all suits. - Policy and Contract Enforcement
Ensuring that agreements, contracts, and policies drafted on behalf of the Ministry are effectively enforced, and that all parties fulfill their legal obligations. - Inter-Departmental & Inter-Ministerial Collaboration
Attending and contributing meaningfully to meetings at the departmental, ministerial, and inter-ministerial levels to provide legal insight and support strategic decision-making.
Through these functions, the Legal Unit safeguards the Ministry’s legal rights and interests, ensuring that all actions and agreements are legally sound and contribute to the Ministry’s success.
