The construction of the Glory Drive Phase II dual carriage road stands as a testament to Bayelsa State’s commitment to infrastructural development and economic growth. This project was conceptualized to create a vital bypass linking the East-West Road to Yenagoa, the state capital, thereby enhancing connectivity and opening up Bayelsa to the outside world.
Historical Background
The first phase of the Glory Drive, stretching from the East-West Road to the Igbogene Roundabout, was completed under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, during his tenure as Governor of Bayelsa State. Phase II, extending from Igbogene to Airport Road, was initiated by Chief Timipre Sylva’s administration and awarded to FAKS Engineering Company Ltd. However, the project faced delays, with only 1.5 km sand-filled and stone-based, and a 4-cell box culvert constructed before being abandoned.
Revival and Completion
Recognizing the strategic importance of the project, the Prosperity Government led by His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, revalidated and re-awarded the contract to CCECC Ltd on February 4, 2021. This reputable construction company brought technical expertise and high-quality equipment to ensure the project’s successful completion.
Project Features
The Glory Drive Phase II spans approximately 10.2 km, featuring:
- A dual carriageway of 7.3 m width with 2 m shoulders on each side.
- A 4 m wide median and 1.5 m walkways on both sides.
- One major roundabout and 12 culverts, including the reconstruction of a failed 4-cell box culvert to accommodate higher water volumes.
- Two layers of asphalt (binder and wearing courses) adhering to modern construction standards.
- Road markings, painting, and solar-powered streetlights along the entire stretch.
Economic Impact
Completed at a cost of ₦25,714,913,336.40, the Glory Drive Phase II was commissioned on September 21, 2023. This road not only enhances transportation efficiency but also boosts economic activities by improving access to Yenagoa and its environs. It symbolizes the Prosperity Government’s dedication to fulfilling its infrastructural promises and fostering development in Bayelsa State.
This project is a significant milestone in Bayelsa’s journey toward modernization and economic integration.
